Indoor CPE vs outdoor ODU
Indoor CPE sits near the user LAN/Wi-Fi. It is simpler to install but depends on indoor cellular signal. Choose indoor when RSRP is strong inside the building and you need Wi-Fi 6 for many clients.
Outdoor ODU / outdoor CPE mounts on a wall, pole, or roof with better antenna gain and sky view, then bridges Ethernet (often PoE) indoors. Choose outdoor when indoor signal is marginal, or when you need IP67 weather protection for permanent FWA.
A common pattern is outdoor 5G ODU + indoor Wi-Fi AP/router: put RF where the signal is, put Wi-Fi where people are.
What to specify on the datasheet
- 5G mode — SA and NSA support for your target operators
- Band list — Sub-6 bands used locally (n78, n41, n71, etc.); do not assume a global SKU covers every market
- Peak vs usable throughput — brochure Gbps needs good SINR, correct MIMO, and backhaul-friendly Ethernet (1G / 2.5G)
- Wi-Fi class — AX1800 / AX3000 / AX3600 / AX6000 for indoor CPE; outdoor ODU may expose Ethernet only
- SIM / eSIM — dual SIM failover for business continuity; eSIM for sealed outdoor units
- Management — TR-069/CWMP for operators; cloud platform / SNMP for enterprise fleets (Yifan IoT Management Platform)
- Environment — indoor 0–40°C vs outdoor IP67 and wider ambient; confirm PoE budget
Operator vs enterprise buying differences
Operators / ISPs usually care about TR-069, custom APN defaults, band/cell lock, remote reboot, and white-label UI. Ask for a field-trial SKU before mass deploy.

FAQ
Do I need outdoor CPE if indoor signal looks “OK” on a phone?
Phone bars are not a throughput test. Run a fixed speed test at the install location at busy hour. If results swing wildly or upload collapses, move RF outdoors.
Is 5G always better than 4G FWA?
Only if your site has usable 5G coverage and the plan pricing fits. A stable LTE Cat6/12 link can outperform a weak 5G cell. Spec both options when surveying.
Can one outdoor CPE serve a whole office Wi-Fi network?
Yes if the ODU bridges to an indoor router/AP with enough Wi-Fi capacity. Do not expect a single outdoor modem to replace a properly designed Wi-Fi LAN.
